Fleet policy and fresh Cargo Metal

Posted 29 Sep 2018

Over the past few years Fly UK has operated a strict policy on fleet selection ensuring modern and efficient fleet types have been selected. At the same time we adopted a stance that we not run fleet types that force our members with payware preference to purchase expansion packs to participate in Fly UK operations.

Whilst the policy was correct at the time we were running in a simming landscape that really only featured FSX and early P3D as the platforms used by members and thus received development support from add-on businesses. In many ways the policy continues to be the right standpoint however the rise in popularity of X-Plane11, V4 compatibility as well as increased cost of FSX/P3D add-ons has been a significant recent challenge for the VA staff team. Certainly times were easier when we all used a common base platform.

To combat this the Exec team have found some creative ways to support our members such as Airbus A350 being made available for XP11 users but jointly running on routes share with 787 or 777 this catering for FSX/P3D users.

Until the recent PMDG 748 expansion release however we have never needed to deal with the add-on question. The expansion cost alone at a similar price to some other full product prices would not justify it inclusion in our fleet, however XP11 users do have SSG 748 availability which they cant currently fly with the VA. As such we have decided to review expansion models going forward on a case by case basis.

In addition, whilst Fly UK Mainstream and all operations will continue to reflect the modern and efficient type requirement, we will permit older types within reason where a specific operational requirement exists.

Further to this Fly UK is please to confirm it has agreed lease on two Boeing 747-8 Freighters to join the cargo fleet based at London Stansted. Set to start service in November, they will operate alongside the 777F and 744F's on an updated Cargo schedule due to be released in the coming months.

FSX/P3D Freeware, SSG and PMDG variants will be made available.
